Among these, one university is considered the biggest in the state due to its size, popularity and wide range of courses.

An Overview of Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is a large state in northern India and has the highest population in the country. It is home to over 241 million people, making it more populated than most countries in the world. The state shares its borders with many other Indian states and Nepal. It covers a big area and its capital is Lucknow, while Prayagraj is the judicial capital.

Biggest University in Uttar Pradesh

Banaras Hindu University is the biggest university in Uttar Pradesh. It is located in Varanasi and was founded in 1916. It is not only one of the largest universities in India but also the biggest residential university in Asia, with over 30,000 students, including 18,000 who live on campus.

Founding of BHU

BHU was started by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya with help from Annie Basant, Maharaja Rameshwar Singh of Darbhanga, and the rulers of Benares, Prabhu Narayan Singh and Aditya Narayan Singh. The goal was to give Indians a place for higher education that taught science, technology and Indian culture.

Support and Land Donation

The land for BHU’s main campus (1,370 acres) was given by Prabhu Narayan Singh. The second campus (2,700 acres) in Mirzapur was donated by Aditya Narayan Singh. Many  other Indian leaders and royal families also supported the university.

Special Features of BHU

BHU was planned as a teaching and residential university, which means students study and stay on campus. It welcomes students from all castes and religions, but also gives religious education to Hindu students. English was the starting medium of teaching and later other Indian languages were added.

Growth and Structure of BHU

BHU is made up of 6 institutes, 14 faculties and around 140 departments. It offers courses in Arts, Science, Medicine, Agriculture, Law, Commerce, Performing Arts and more. The engineering institute of BHU became IIT (BHU) in 2012.

National and Global Recognition

BHU is one of the ”Institute of Eminence” selected by the Indian government. It is also part of the BRICS Universities League, a group of top research universities from BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa).

BHU Today

Today, BHU has over 65 hostels and students from 48 countries come here to study. The university celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2016. It continues to be a center of learning and research.
