These initiative aims to strengthen the inland fisheries infrastructure, also to promote modern aquaculture technologies and will create the employment opportunities across the state.

Potential of Bihar’s Vast Inland Fisheries

The State of Bihar possesses India’s one of the richest inland fisheries resource bases. The state has around the 1.22 lakh hectares of ponds and tanks, 0.64 lakh hectares of reservoirs, nearly 9.5 lakh hectares of floodplain lakes and wetlands and more than 21,000 kilometres of the rivers and canals.

A variety of fish species which includes the Rohu, Catla, Mrigal, Tilapia, Pangasius, Magur, Pabda, Scampi and ornamental fish are cultivated across the state of Bihar.

These resources provides the Bihar with the immense potential to become as a leading inland fisheries producer.

Massive Government Investment in Fisheries

Over the last eleven years, the Government of India has approved the fisheries-related projects worth ₹902.84 crore for Bihar. Out of this, ₹579.72 crore has been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

These investments have supported the development of the hatcheries, brood banks, fish feed plants, cold-chain infrastructure, biofloc units, Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS), transport facilities and the aquatic diagnostic laboratories.

As a result of this Bihar’s fish production has more than doubled which helped the state rise from ninth position to fourth position among the India’s inland fish-producing states.

Today, Bihar exports nearly to the 89,600 metric tonnes of fish annually to neighboring states and making it a net fish-exporting state in the region.

Integrated Aqua Park at Bhojpur

The Integrated Aqua Park will be established at the Vanasaur Fish Seed Farm in the Bhojpur with the cost of ₹31.21 crore under PMMSY.

The facility will include the advanced aquaculture infrastructure such as carp and catfish hatcheries, brooder incubation units, biofloc systems, RAS units, fish feed manufacturing facilities, disease diagnostic laboratories, quarantine facilities and a 50-bed training hostel.

This project aims to ensure the quality fish seed availability, encourage technology adoption among fish farmers and provides the structured skill development program to boost the productivity and income generation.

NFDB Regional Centre to Strengthen Eastern India

The newly inaugurated NFDB Regional Centre in Patna will act as the key institutional hub for Bihar and the eastern region.

This centre will facilitate the better implementation of the fisheries schemes, technological support, capacity building and entrepreneurship development.

It will promote the modern aquaculture practices such as the cage culture, precision aquaculture, biofloc technology and RAS-based fish farming while providing the continuous technical assistance to fishers and aquaculture entrepreneurs.

Wetland Fisheries Cluster to Unlock Growth

To maximize the utilization of the Bihar’s extensive wetland resources, a Wetland Fisheries Cluster covering approximately around 9.5 lakh hectares of floodplain lakes and derelict water bodies has been notified.

The cluster model also focuses on to the community-based fisheries management, coordinated fish stocking and shared post-harvest infrastructure which can significantly enhance the productivity and sustainability in the fisheries sector.
