Department of Posts Starts Drone-Based Mail Transmission in Remote Himachal Areas
The Department of Post has launched the drone-based mail transmission service in Himachal Pradesh, started the transporting mail and parcels through drones between Mandi Head Post Office and Rehardhar Branch Post Office and it will dramatically reducing the delivery time in the difficult mountainous terrain. This initiative reflects the government’s focus on the emerging technologies which improve the public service delivery and strengthen connectivity in remote regions of country.
Respectable Union Minister of Communications and DoNER, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia has announced that the launch of drone-based mail transmission between Mandi Head Post Office and Rehardhar Branch Post Office in Himachal Pradesh.
This service was operationalized on 12th of June 2026 and it represents the significant step towards to modernizing the postal operations in challenging geographical regions.
The initiative emerged from interactions between the minister and Gramin Dak Sevaks as well as Postal Assistants who have highlighted the need for faster and more reliable connectivity in the remote and mountainous areas.
One of the most important achievements of the project is the substantial reduction in mail transit time.
Rehardhar Branch Post Office is located around 12 kilometers from Mandi Head Post Office. Under the conventional transport arrangements, mail delivery between the two locations required more than two hours because of the high difficult terrain and road conditions.
With the deployment of drones, this same journey can now be completed in approximately seven minutes which enabling significantly faster movement of letters, parcels and essential documents.
The Mandi-Rehardhar corridor is the first route to operationalize by Department of Posts for drone delivery initiative.
Building on this success, the department plans to deploy the drone-based mail transmission services on nearly 150 identified routes across Himachal Pradesh and Assam over the next two to three months.
The expansion also aims to enhance the service delivery in the remote regions where traditional transportation methods often faces the logistical challenges.
The initiative is also expected to improve the access to the essential postal services for communities who are living in remote and mountainous regions.
The faster delivery of the communication, financial services, government documents and parcels can enhance the economic opportunities and will strengthen the social connectivity.
By overcoming terrain-related barriers, drone-based postal services can plays the important role to bridge the gap between urban centers and remote communities of India.
