Bihar: About

Bihar is located in the eastern part of India. Bihar shares its international borders with Nepal and in India, it shares its borders with West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. It is the third largest populated state in India and the world’s fourth most populous sub-national entity. Bihar is derived from the word ‘Vihara’ which means monastery. The state represents several large monasteries, and several Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and Jain shrines. Bihar is one of the most deeply linked places to Buddha’s life. The official languages of Bihar are Bhojpuri, Magahi, Maithili, and other local languages. Bihar is one of the states that are behind other Indian states in terms of social and economic development. Before 2000, Bihar and Jharkhand were the same states. On 15th November 2000, south Bihar was separated and Jharkhand was made a new state.

Bihar: History

  • Ancient history of Bihar suggests that the Chirand has an Archaeological record from the Neolithic age which mentions a few places of Bihar; Magadha, Mithila, and Anga.
  • The Magadha was ruled by the Haryanka dynasty which was founded in 684 BCE. The two prominent kings were Bimbisara and Ajatashatru. Ajatashatru founded the city of Pataliputra which was the capital of Magadha later.
  • The Haryanka dynasty was followed by the Shishunaga dynasty and Nanda Dynasty. The Nanda Dynasty was replaced by the Maurya empire which was India’s first empire.
  • The Mauryan Empire and the religion of Buddhism emerged together in Bihar.
  • The Mauryan Empire was founded by Chandragupta Maurya in 325 BCE.
  • The Gupta Empire, originated in Magadha in 240 CE which is referred to as the Golden Age of India.
  • The Mediaeval history of Bihar suggests that Buddhism in Magadha declined due to the invasion of Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji.
  • During the Colonial era, the British East India Company obtained Diwani rights for Bihar, Bengal, and Odisha.
  • Bihar attracted foreign imperialism due to fertile land, water, and skilled labor.

  • Bihar has three physical regions; The southern plateau, the Shivalik Region, and Bihar’s Gangetic Plain.
  • Bihar’s temperature remains up to 26°C. The climate is humid subtropical as it lies completely in the subtropical region.
  • This state generally receives less amount of rainfall and the rainy days occur from May to September.
  • 7.27% of the geographical area is covered by the reserved forest areas which cover 6,845 sq km of area.
  • The Valmiki National Park covers 800 Km2 of forest and it ranks as the 18th Tiger Reserve of India and ranks fourth in terms of density of tiger population.
