The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will showcase a dazzling array of films. Scheduled to occur from May 16 to 27, 2023. Accomplished Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund has been chosen to preside over the jury for the occasion.

The festival’s official poster, which pays tribute to actress Catherine Deneuve for her impactful contributions to the world of cinema, was created by Lionel Avignon and Stefan de Vivies at Hartland Villa using a photograph taken by Jack Garofalo during the filming of La Chamade (1968). The opening film for the festival is set to be Jeanne du Barry, directed by Maïwenn, while the festival will conclude with the popular Pixar motion picture Elemental, helmed by Peter Sohn.

Cannes Film festival 2023: Date

The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes in Cannes is hosting the 76th Cannes Festival from May 16 to May 27, with Ruben Östlund as the appointed jury president. In the previous year, India held the position of the official Country of Honour during the Marché du Film, which took place concurrently with the Cannes Film Festival in France.

The Cannes International Film Festival, held annually in Cannes, France, will witness the gathering of prominent celebrities from the global entertainment industry on its renowned red carpet. The festival showcases an array of new films, spanning various genres, including documentaries, from all over the world.

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival commences on Tuesday, May 16 and will continue until May 27, held in France. Distinguished celebrities from the global entertainment industry will gather on the red carpet for the event.

Jeanne du Barry will cut the ribbon to commence the Cannes 2023 schedule, which is as follows:

  • May 17: Monster, Homecoming/Le Retour
  • May 18: Monster, Homecoming/Le Retour, Black Files
  • May 19: Black Flies, Kuru Otlar Ustune, The Zone of Interest, Les Filles D’olfa (Four Daughters)
  • May 20: The Zone of Interest, Les Filles D’olfa (Four Daughters), Banel E Adama, May December
  • May 21: Banel E Adama, May December, Anatomie D’une Chute (Anatomy of a Fall), Firebrand
  • May 22: Anatomie D’une Chute, Firebrand, Kuolleet Lehdet (Les Feuilles Mortes / Fallen Leaves), Club Zero
  • May 23: Kuolleet Lehdet, Club Zero, Asteroid City, Rapito
  • May 24: Asteroid City, Rapito, La Passion De Dodin Bouffant, A Brighter Tomorrow
  • May 25: La Passion De Dodin Bouffant, A Brighter Tomorrow, Perfect Days, Last Summer
  • May 26: Perfect Days, Last Summer, La Chimera, The Old Oak
  • May 27: Elemental, followed by the Closing Ceremony.

Cannes Film festival 2023: India

  • This year’s festival will showcase four Indian films, as announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
  • Kanu Behl’s “Agra” will be displayed in the Directors’ Fortnight section, while Anurag Kashyap’s “Kennedy” will feature in Midnight Screenings. Additionally, “Nehemich” will be shown in the La Cinef section of the Festival de Cannes, and a restored Manipuri film, “Ishanhou,” will be presented in the Classics section.
  • Indian cinema has been well-represented at the Cannes Film Festival over the years, with numerous festival sections featuring Indian films that have garnered critical acclaim.

The Indian Pavilion will centre on the theme of Showcasing India’s Creative Economy this year, with its design being conceptualised and created by the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. The pavilion’s design is inspired by the Saraswati Yantra, an abstract depiction of the goddess Saraswati, who embodies knowledge, music, art, speech, wisdom, and learning.

Cannes Film festival 2023: Celebrities

India will be well-represented on the Cannes red carpet, with various celebrities from the entertainment industry attending the event. Manushi Chhillar, an actor and former Miss World, will join actors Esha Gupta and Kangabam Tomba, along with Oscar winner Guneet Monga and Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L Murugan. Singer Kumar Sanu’s daughter, Shannon K, will also be present at the event.

  • Anushka Sharma, the L’Oréal Paris brand ambassador, will make her debut on the Cannes red carpet, where she will attend the celebration of women in film. Sara Ali Khan will also walk the red carpet, making her Cannes debut, and Andrea Kevichusa, who debuted in Bollywood alongside Ayushmann Khurrana in “Anek,” will represent Nagaland at Cannes 2023, accompanied by veteran filmmaker Kivini Shohe.
  • In addition, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, a veteran attendee at Cannes, and Aditi Rao Hydari, will be present at the event.
  • Dolly Singh, an influencer and content creator, will make her debut at Cannes this year.
  • Anurag Kashyap, a Bollywood director, is also expected to attend the festival.
  • His film “Kennedy” has been chosen for the Midnight Screenings section of the Festival de Cannes, with the lead actor Rahul Bhatt reportedly accompanying Kashyap to the event.

The growing popularity of Indian cinema around the world showcases its rich cultural diversity, and with the acceleration of globalization, there are more opportunities for Indian filmmakers to demonstrate their skills and discover new markets.
