Centre Launches ₹189.79 Crore Mizoram Ginger Mission to Boost Exports

Centre has launched the ₹189.79 crore Mizoram Ginger Mission. This initiative aims to transform the Mizo ginger into a globally recognized premium agricultural product. The mission is backed by Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) and the project focuses on better farmer earnings, modern processing infrastructure, export readiness and international branding.

What Is the Mizoram Ginger Mission?

The Mizoram Ginger Mission is the Centre supported agricultural value chain development initiative which is designed to strengthen every stage of ginger production from cultivation to international exports.

The program was launched virtually on the May 13, 2026, by the Union DONER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma.

The mission is structured to solve one of the main challenges in agriculture which is farmers producing high value crops but receiving very low returns.

Instead of just focusing only on cultivation, the project aims to create the complete commercial ecosystem.

Why Mizo Ginger Is Getting Global Attention

The major reason behind this mission is the unique quality of Mizorams ginger.

According to officials, Mizo ginger contains 6-8% oleoresin, it is a key natural extract widely used in,

  • Food processing
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Beverages
  • Cosmetics
  • Herbal products

Globally, average ginger oleoresin content is around 3% and this makes Mizo ginger significantly richer in commercial quality.

Despite with its premium quality, farmers reportedly earn only ₹8 to ₹15 per kilogram but the international market values can cross ₹500 per kilogram depending on the processed form and export grade.

This creates the huge value gap is and this mission will play central role.

The Four-Pillar Strategy Behind the Mission

Union Minister Scindia described the initiative as the ‘Mizo Ginger Movement’ which built around four major pillars.

Value Addition

Instead of selling the raw ginger at low prices this mission will promote processing into higher value products.

This could includes the dried ginger, extracts, oleoresin, powders and packaged export products.

Branding

Also to create a premium market identity for ‘Mizo Ginger’ is a central goal.

Strong branding will helps agricultural products command higher prices in the global markets.

Market Integration

The mission aims to directly connect the farmers with larger domestic and international buyers.

This will reduces their dependency on fragmented middlemen networks.

Convergence

Different departments, schemes and infrastructure support systems will be aligned to improve the efficiency.

Processing Hubs and Farmer Integration

The project also includes the major infrastructure development.

Planned components under the mission includes the,

  • 1 integrated processing hub
  • 3 spoke processing centres
  • 30+ strategic interventions across the value chain

The mission aims to connect the nearly 20,000 farming households into coordinated agricultural ecosystem.

GI Tags Give Mizoram a Strong Branding Advantage

Mizoram already holds the important branding asset.

Two ginger varieties from the state received Geographical Indication (GI) tags in 2021 which are,

  • Thingpui Ginger
  • Thinglaidum Ginger

GI status helps to protect the product identity and improves branding value.
