The Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2024 concluded on October 25th at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi, marking the second edition of this significant international seminar hosted by the Indian Army. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, strategic thinkers, academics, veterans, and defense personnel from various countries, all focused on analyzing India’s strategic directions and developmental priorities.
The theme of this year’s dialogue, “Drivers in Nation Building: Fueling Growth Through Comprehensive Security,” facilitated vital discussions on how security dynamics intertwine with national and international policymaking.
The two-day event featured prominent speakers from India, the U.S., Russia, Israel, and Sri Lanka, who provided global insights on how security influences the developmental trajectory of nations, particularly in alignment with India’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047. Key addresses included Dr. S Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, who emphasized the role of India’s space sector in enhancing national security, particularly in the context of emerging threats in space. Additionally, Ms. Ruchira Kamboj, former Permanent Representative of India to the UN, highlighted India’s evolving role in shaping multilateral frameworks and advocating for the Global South.
Chaired by Shri RR Swain (IPS), the session addressed the vital link between a secure environment and economic growth. Panelists discussed internal security challenges, including terrorism and governance, stressing the need for societal unity and equitable development. They proposed evidence-based policies aimed at enhancing national security through community engagement and improved law enforcement.
Led by Lt Gen Raj Shukla (Retd), this session explored how emerging technologies like AI, quantum computing, and IoT can bolster security. Panelists provided recommendations for strengthening cyber resilience and developing ethical guidelines for technology use in security applications.
Chaired by Vice Admiral A B Singh (Retd), the final session focused on integrating advanced technologies in the Indian Army to enhance battlefield readiness. Discussions highlighted the importance of indigenous defense technologies and strategic partnerships to address current and future challenges in land warfare.
In his closing address, Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani, Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), reiterated the intrinsic link between economic growth and national security, advocating for a “Whole of Nation” approach to defense. He underscored the need for local community involvement in border area development and highlighted the evolving nature of warfare, emphasizing the importance of training and technological proficiency.
