Chennai Metro Rail to Launch Trial Run of Driverless Train for Phase II Project

Chennai is set to witness a significant advancement in its public transportation system with the upcoming trial run of the first three-coach driverless train for the Phase II project of the Chennai Metro Rail. This ambitious initiative, part of a larger Rs 63,246 crore investment in urban infrastructure, marks a pivotal step in modernizing the city’s metro services and improving overall connectivity.

Trial Run Scheduled for October 26

The inaugural trial run is expected to take place on October 26, with high-profile dignitaries such as Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar invited to flag off the event. According to sources, confirmation of the schedule is anticipated within the next two days, highlighting the excitement surrounding this milestone for Chennai’s transportation network.

Arrival of the Driverless Train Coaches

The driverless train coaches were transported from Sri City to the depot facility at Poonamallee, arriving in the early hours of October 17. This transportation is a crucial phase in the preparation for the metro’s expansion, and the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has implemented several new features in these trains to enhance passenger experience. Among these features are new digital displays for route information and charging points for electronic devices, which are increasingly important for today’s tech-savvy commuters.

Poonamallee Depot: A Hub for Maintenance and Repair

At the heart of this operation is the Rs 187 crore depot located in Poonamallee, which spans 40.5 acres and includes the construction of 17 buildings. This depot is essential for the maintenance and repair of the trains that will operate within the Phase II project. The facility is designed to support the ongoing operational needs of the metro, ensuring efficiency and reliability in the transportation system.

Current Testing and Inspection Procedures

Currently, the train is stationed on the Inspection Bay Line, where various systems, including circuits, brakes, ventilation, and air-conditioning, are undergoing rigorous checks. The CMRL officials are ensuring that all components are functioning correctly before the trial run.

In preparation for the trial, the train will undergo multiple tests at low speeds of 10-15 kmph on the inspection track throughout the week. Following these preliminary assessments, it will transition to the 820-metre ballasted test track for its first official test run. These meticulous testing protocols are crucial to guarantee the safety and performance of the driverless system before it is put into operation.

Future Operations and Expansion Plans

The Phase II project includes a vital corridor between Poonamallee and Porur, which is part of corridor 4 of the metro expansion (running from Light House to Poonamallee). For this service to be fully operational, CMRL has planned to prepare 36 trains. The next batch of coaches is scheduled to arrive starting in November, at which point further testing will commence to ensure readiness for public use.
