Chhattisgarh Government Approves High-Level Committee for UCC Implementation

Chhattisgarh government has approved the formation of the high-level committee to prepare the draft for to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. The decision was announced under the Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and it places the state among the growing list of other states who are exploring or implemented the common civil law framework.

What is the Latest Development on UCC in Chhattisgarh?

The Chhattisgarh state cabinet has officially decided to set up the high-level committee.

This committee will,

  • Study the practicality of the implementing UCC
  • Prepare the comprehensive draft framework.
  • Consider the legal, cultural and social implications as per the framework.

This marks important policy level initiative which will not be immediate implementation but it hints that the process will involve the consultations and detailed analysis.

Chhattisgarh Joins Other States in UCC

With this move Chhattisgarh becomes the third BJP-ruled state in the recent times who have taken the take steps towards the UCC.

  • Years ago State of Uttarakhand has already implemented the UCC.
  • Recently in the last month Gujarat assembly have passed the UCC Bill.
  • Now the Chhattisgarh has also initiated the drafting process

Legal and Constitutional Context of UCC

The idea of Uniform Civil Code is mentioned in Article 44 of the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP) in the Constitution of Indian. It encourages the State to implement the uniform set of civil laws for all citizens.

However since DPSPs are non-justiciable and its implementation depends on political will and legislative action of the state.

The introduction of UCC at the state level reflects the gradual approach towards the achieving legal uniformity and equality in personal laws.
