China Builds New Presidential Palace in Vanuatu
China has constructed a new presidential palace in Vanuatu, symbolizing the strengthening relationship between the two nations. The Vanuatu Prime Minister, Charlot Salwai, inaugurated the new building, which is part of a broader project that includes a new finance ministry and renovations to the foreign affairs department.
China’s embassy reported that the project cost over $21 million, a substantial sum for Vanuatu, a nation of fewer than 300,000 people. This investment reflects China’s commitment to developing friendly cooperation with Pacific island countries, including Vanuatu.
The official handover ceremony featured Chinese dragon dancers and the ceremonial brewing of kava. A Chinese delegation presented an oversized golden key to Prime Minister Salwai, marking the occasion.
Hundreds of Vanuatu public servants will work rent-free in the new buildings. However, Vanuatu’s significant debt to China, with about 40 percent of its external debt owed to China’s Exim bank, raises concerns about China’s growing influence in the region.
China’s investments in Vanuatu are part of a broader strategy to increase its influence in the Pacific, competing with Western rivals. Critics worry about the potential for “debt-trap diplomacy,” where indebted nations become increasingly reliant on Chinese financial support.
China’s ambassador to Vanuatu, Li Minggang, expressed China’s readiness to enhance pragmatic cooperation, indicating ongoing and future projects that may further bind the two nations.
