Haveri district in Karnataka is often called the “Land of Cardamom” (Elaichi). The region is famous for its special link with cardamom and other fragrant products, including aromatic garlands. Cardamom Production in Haveri

Although the district is famous for its cardamom garlands, cardamom farming has declined in recent years due to a decrease in the number of growers. However, cardamom trade remains important. Traders in Haveri process and sell cardamoms from the Malnad region.

Varieties of Cardamom

In Karnataka, cardamom is mostly grown in the lower valleys of undulating terrains. Two main varieties of cardamom are:

  • Elettaria cardamom Maton variety major
  • Watt variety minor

Famous for Cardamom Garlands

Haveri is renowned for its cardamom garlands, which are handcrafted from fresh cardamom pods and decorated with silk threads, beads and wool. These garlands are widely used:

  • For decoration during marriages
  • To honor political and social leaders
  • To adorn statues

The garlands are not only popular in India but are also in demand in countries like Japan, the UK and the United States.

Haveri is not just about cardamom. The district also grows other spices, including chilies, which are an important crop here.

Haveri is located in the center of Karnataka, equally distant from Bidar in the north and Kollegal in the south. Know for its rich culture and heritage, it is also referred to as the gateway to North Karnataka.
