CM Nitish Kumar Launches Patna Metro’s First Phase

In a major step for Bihar’s urban infrastructure, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today inaugurated the first phase of the Patna Metro Rail Service. The much-awaited launch comes after six years since the project was initiated, with the CM taking a ride from New Pataliputra Bus Terminal (ISBT) to Bhootnath Station.

Project Highlights

  • The first phase—named the Priority Corridor—features a 3.6-kilometre-long elevated track. This corridor marks the formal start of metro operations in Patna and connects three key stations: ISBT, Zero Mile, and Bhootnath.
  • Public metro rides will officially begin from October 7. The corridor is designed to ease congestion and offer fast, reliable transport within the city.

Metro Operations and Details

Each metro train comprises three coaches, with a capacity of around 900 passengers per trip. The metro will operate daily from 8 AM to 10 PM, with approximately 40 to 42 trips per day, and a 20-minute frequency between trains.

The fare structure is commuter-friendly,

  • Minimum fare: ₹15
  • Maximum fare: ₹30

To ensure commuter safety and operational discipline, the Bihar State Auxiliary Police (B-SAP) will oversee security inside the metro system.

Background & Timeline

  • The foundation stone for the Patna Metro project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2019.
  • Since then, the project has seen significant planning and construction efforts, culminating in today’s inauguration.
  • This phase is only the beginning of the larger Patna Metro network, which aims to transform urban mobility across the capital city of Bihar.

Strategic Importance

The launch of the metro is expected to,

  • Ease traffic congestion in core areas
  • Promote public transport over private vehicles
  • Enhance connectivity for daily commuters

This move also signifies Bihar’s commitment to embracing smart city infrastructure and integrating Patna into India’s expanding urban transit map.
