Which is the Coldest Place in Bihar State?

Bihar is a state in eastern India that experiences both hot summers and chilly winters. While most parts of Bihar have moderate winter temperatures, some places get extremely cold, especially during December and January. The temperature in these areas can drop significantly, affecting daily life. People wear warm clothes and use heaters to stay comfortable. But which is the coldest place in Bihar? Let’s find us.

An Overview of Bihar

Bihar is a state in eastern India. It is the third most populated state and the 12th largest by area. The river Ganges divides Bihar from west to east. It shares borders with Uttar Pradesh, Nepal, West Bengal and Jharkhand. In 2000, southern Bihar became the state of Jharkhand. Most people live in villages and Bihar has the highest number of young people in India. Hindi is the official language.

Number of Districts of Bihar

Bihar has 38 districts, which are divided into 101 subdivisions and 535 community development (CD) blocks. These districts help in the smooth administration of the state and ensure better governance at the local level.

Coldest Place in Bihar

Gaya is known as the coldest place in Bihar, where winter temperatures often fall to around 4°C or even lower. The district experiences severe cold during December and January, with thick fog and icy winds making daily life hard. Despite the harsh weather, people find some comfort when the sun appears during the day, bringing a little warmth to the chilly surroundings.

Gaya Recorded the Coldest Temperature

On a winter day, Gaya recorded a minimum temperature of 4.6ºC, which was 4ºC lower than normal. The maximum temperature during the day was 19.6ºC. This made Gaya the coldest place in Bihar on that day.

Why is Gaya So Cold?

Several factors cause cold waves in Gaya:

  • Dense Fog: Reduces sunlight, making the air colder.
  • Cold and dry north-westerly winds: Bring icy air from colder regions.
  • Moderate to intense cold waves: Sudden temperature drops due to weather changes.

Other Cold Places in Bihar

Apart from Gaya, some other districts also experience cold winters. These include:

  • Dehri
  • Banka
  • Aurangabad
  • Buxar
  • Arwal
  • Bhagalpur
  • Vaishali
  • Saharsa
