CRPF Foundation Day: Celebrating Valor and Service

On July 27, 1939, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was established as the Crown Representatives Police in response to political turmoil within princely states. It has since evolved into a key central paramilitary force of India, playing a critical role in maintaining internal security. The force was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force on December 28, 1949, following a legislative act, and now operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Maintaining Law and Order

    • Crowd and Riot Control: CRPF personnel are adept at managing large gatherings and demonstrations.
    • Counter-Insurgency: Specialized units address insurgency threats and conduct operations in affected areas.
    • Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) Management: Units focus on combating LWE activities in Naxal-affected regions, providing security for development projects.

Security and Protection

VIP Security: About 5.68% of CRPF personnel are assigned to protect high-profile figures, including governors and chief ministers.

Critical Infrastructure: Approximately 8.5% of personnel safeguard vital government facilities and infrastructure.

Election Security: The CRPF ensures secure elections through strategic deployments and coordination.

Additional Responsibilities

Environmental Protection: Collaborates with forest departments to protect wildlife and natural resources.

Disaster Management: Engages in rescue and relief operations during natural disasters.

UN Peacekeeping Missions: Contributes to international peacekeeping with expertise in crowd control and security.

Special Units

Rapid Action Force (RAF): Established in 1992 to manage riots and public disturbances, the RAF is known for its quick response and has received the President’s Colour for its service.

Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA): Created for guerrilla and jungle warfare, CoBRA excels in counter-insurgency operations in Maoist-affected regions.

VIP Security Wing: Focuses on the protection of high-profile individuals with meticulous care.

Mahila Battalions: Comprising all-women battalions, these units handle situations involving women with sensitivity.

Achievements and Contributions

Historical Significance: Key roles in integrating princely states, participating in major battles, and managing Partition riots.

Safeguarding National Security: Successfully thwarted significant attacks and controlled militancy and insurgency in various regions.

Combatting Left-Wing Extremism: Significant efforts in eradicating Naxalism, with notable operations in Naxal zones.

Disaster Relief: Active participation in major natural disaster relief efforts.

International Service: Notable contributions to UN peacekeeping missions globally.

Honouring Bravehearts

The CRPF has lost 2,255 personnel in service, receiving numerous accolades for their bravery, including the Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Police Medals for Gallantry.
