Cyclone Gezani Hits Madagascar: 20 Dead, Thousands Displaced
Tropical Cyclone Gezani has caused widespread destruction in Madagascar after making landfall in the eastern port city of Toamasina. According to official reports, at least 20 people have lost their lives, while several others were injured as wind speeds crossed 195 km per hour.
The country’s meteorological department issued a red alert, warning of heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides as the cyclone moved across the island nation in the Indian Ocean.
Toamasina, Madagascar’s main port city, suffered extensive infrastructure damage.
Rescue and relief operations are underway as authorities assess the full scale of destruction.
President Michael Randrianirina visited the affected region to review the situation and oversee relief efforts. Emergency services are working to restore electricity and provide temporary shelter to displaced families.
The cyclone is moving westward, raising concerns about further flooding and structural damage in interior regions.
Cyclone Gezani struck just weeks after Cyclone Fytia impacted Madagascar, compounding the country’s humanitarian crisis. Frequent cyclones in the southwest Indian Ocean region have made Madagascar highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters.
The back-to-back storms have strained relief systems and disrupted recovery efforts, leaving the country bracing for more extreme weather events in the coming months.
