GST Council Announces Cuts Tax Slabs to Two

  • The GST Council has simplified India’s tax structure by reducing the four tax slabs to two5% and 18% — to boost consumer spending and ease the burden on the middle class.
  • The 12% and 28% slabs were scrapped, with many items shifting to lower rates, making products like consumer durables, staples, medicines, footwear, and renewable energy equipment cheaper.
  • The changes will take effect from September 22, 2025, excluding sin goods like pan masala, tobacco, and cigarettes, which retain higher rates. Some products like sugary drinks and coal will see a tax increase.

Govt Approves ₹1,500 Cr Scheme for Mineral Recycling

  • The Union Cabinet has approved a Rs.1,500 crore Incentive Scheme under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) to boost critical mineral recycling from e-waste, lithium-ion battery (LIB) scrap, and other secondary sources.
  • Spanning FY 2025-26 to FY 2030-31, the scheme offers 20% Capex subsidy and Opex incentives on incremental sales, with caps of Rs.50 crore for large and Rs.25 crore for small entities.
  • It aims to build 270 kiloton recycling capacity, yield 40 kiloton critical minerals annually, attract Rs.8,000 crore investment, and generate 70,000 jobs, supporting both new and existing recyclers, including start-ups.

UPSC to Set Up Centre of Excellence As Best Practices

  • UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar has announced the plan to establish a Centre of Excellence as a repository of best practices from UPSC and State Public Service Commissions.
  • Revealed during a virtual meeting with representatives from 27 State PSCs, the Centre will act as a knowledge hub for SOPs, innovations, and key learnings, aiming to benefit not just the UPSC and State PSCs but also other national recruitment bodies.
  • Dr. Kumar also highlighted the impact of the Pratibha Setu portal, which supports candidates who reached the UPSC interview stage but didn’t make the final selection.

WHO Warning For Suicide Causes 1 in 100 Deaths

  • Suicide accounts for over 1 in every 100 deaths globally, with 7.27 lakh suicides reported in 2021, prompting the WHO to call for urgent action, especially to protect young people, where it remains a leading cause of death.
  • The WHO’s World Mental Health Today report found suicide was the second leading cause of death among girls (15–29) and third among boys in the same age group.
  • Despite a 35% global decline in suicide rates since 2000, the world is on track for only a 12% reduction by 2030, far short of the one-third target.

India-Japan Joint Credit Mechanism for Climate Action

  • India and Japan have signed a landmark Joint Credit Mechanism (JCM) under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement to strengthen carbon trading, drive green investments, and promote sustainable innovation.
  • Signed by India’s Ministry of Environment and the Government of Japan, the JCM enhances bilateral climate cooperation amid rising US tariffs on Indian exports and China’s rare earth restrictions.
  • It aligns with broader India-Japan deals worth ¥10 trillion (Rs 6 trillion) in AI, defence, semiconductors, and critical minerals.

World Boxing Championships Kick Off in Liverpool

  • The World Boxing Championships begin tomorrow in Liverpool, UK, under the new governing body World Boxing, featuring both men’s and women’s events together for the first time.
  • India enters with strong contenders like Nikhat Zareen (51kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), and Pooja Rani, forming the core of the women’s team.
  • The men’s squad, led by Sumit Kundu, includes experienced names like Sachin Siwach and promising debutants such as Jadumani Singh, Hitesh Gulia, and Abhinash Jamwal, aiming to make their mark.
