Data Shows 34% Children Under Five Are Stunted: India’s Malnutrition Burden Explained

Recent government data tabled in Parliament reveals that malnutrition among children below five years continues to be a serious challenge in India, even though real-time monitoring shows gradual improvement. The information originates from the Poshan Tracker system, which compiles measurements of children enrolled in Anganwadi centres nationwide.

Current Status of Child Nutrition

According to the latest Poshan Tracker records, over 6.44 crore children were assessed for their height and weight. The analysis shows that 33.54 per cent of children are stunted, indicating chronic undernutrition, 14.41 per cent are underweight, and 5.03 per cent are wasted, reflecting acute growth deficiency. These indicators give a real-time picture of child nutrition status under community-based surveillance.

Comparison with Earlier Surveys

A comparison with earlier findings from the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019–21) suggests marginal improvement. NFHS-5 had reported 35.5 per cent stunting, 32.1 per cent underweight, and 19.3 per cent wasting among children under five. Officials say that these reductions reflect better service delivery and increased engagement through behaviour-change initiatives.

Impact of Poshan Abhiyaan Interventions

A World Bank survey in 2021 conducted across 11 high-burden states found that women who participated in Poshan Abhiyaan activities—such as home visits, counselling, and community events—showed better nutrition practices. The outreach achieved more than 80 per cent message penetration and recorded exclusive breastfeeding rates of 81 per cent among respondents. These trends demonstrate how awareness-based interventions can improve health outcomes.

Policy Framework and Monitoring

Under Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0, the government has merged core nutrition programmes to strengthen service delivery. The Poshan Tracker, launched in March 2021, acts as a central governance tool for identifying stunting, wasting, and underweight cases, which enables timely counselling and targeted action aimed at reducing malnutrition across states.
