Day of the Seafarer 2025: Building a Future of Respect at Sea
Every year on 25 June, the world observes the Day of the Seafarer, recognizing the critical contributions of seafarers to global trade, economies, and society. This year, the celebration is infused with a bold call to action through the campaign ‘My Harassment-Free Ship’, aiming to promote zero tolerance for bullying and harassment at sea.
This initiative, led by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), highlights the need for a cultural shift in the maritime industry—one that places safety, equality, and dignity at the heart of every vessel.
‘My Harassment-Free Ship’ is more than a slogan—it is a movement for change. Seafarers worldwide are being invited to imagine, demand, and help create workplaces that are free from bullying, discrimination, and harassment.
The goal is to foster a maritime culture where every individual feels safe, valued, and protected, regardless of their gender, rank, or background.
Numerous reports and studies reveal the harsh reality of life at sea:
Over 50% of female seafarers report experiencing harassment.
A significant number of male seafarers also face bullying and discrimination.
Many incidents go unreported due to fear of retaliation or ineffective reporting mechanisms.
The emotional toll, loss of career opportunities, and mental health impacts caused by such incidents are severe and widespread.
In his video message, Dominguez urges the entire maritime sector to embrace zero-tolerance policies and commit to reshaping shipboard cultures. He emphasizes the role of leadership training, support systems, and effective reporting mechanisms in making this transformation real and lasting.
Seafarers are encouraged to share personal experiences through social media or other platforms. This grassroots storytelling can play a powerful role in breaking the silence around harassment and inspiring others to stand up against abuse.
This year’s campaign features maritime influencers and vloggers from around the globe who will amplify the message across platforms. These creators will share first-hand insights, advocate for safe working environments, and mobilize online communities to take action.
The IMO is making campaign materials—including logos, posters, and a digital billboard—freely available. The campaign is active on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, ensuring wide reach and engagement from the global maritime audience.
Be brave. Speak up. Share your stories to help others and create a new culture at sea.
Implement and strengthen anti-harassment policies, conduct onboard training, and establish trusted reporting channels.
Support this movement by advocating for seafarers’ rights, ensuring compliance with international standards, and pressuring for change at a global level.
