Defence Ministry Inks Rs 458 Crore Deal With HAL
In a significant development, the Ministry of Defence has recently signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of two Dornier Aircraft, aimed at enhancing the aerial surveillance capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). With an overall cost of Rs 458 crore, this contract represents a strategic investment in bolstering India’s maritime security.
Under the contract, HAL will undertake the indigenous manufacturing of the Dornier Aircraft at their Kanpur facility. This move aligns with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and emphasizes the nation’s commitment to achieving self-reliance in defence production. By manufacturing these aircraft domestically, India takes a significant step towards strengthening its defence industry and reducing dependence on imports.
The two Dornier Aircraft to be procured for the Indian Coast Guard will be equipped with state-of-the-art features, enhancing their operational effectiveness in conducting maritime surveillance missions. These advanced equipment include a glass cockpit, maritime patrol radar, electro-optic infrared devices and a mission management system, among others. Such advanced technology will enable the Indian Coast Guard to effectively monitor and secure the country’s vast maritime areas of responsibility.
This recent contract signing builds upon the successful partnership between HAL and the Ministry of Defence. Earlier this year, in March, a deal was sealed between the two entities for the procurement of six Dornier aircraft for the Indian Air Force at a cost of Rs 667 crore to foster indigenous manufacturing in the aerospace sector.
The acquisition of two Dornier Aircraft by the Indian Coast Guard represents a significant step towards bolstering India’s maritime security. The country’s extensive coastline and exclusive economic zone require constant vigilance and efficient surveillance to safeguard national interests, combat maritime threats, and ensure the safety of maritime trade and commerce.
