Karnataka, a state in southern India, is known for its rich culture, heritage, and educational institutions. However, there are significant disparities in literacy rates across its districts. Among them, Yadgir district has the lowest literacy rate, which highlights the challenges the region faces in terms of education and development.
Karnataka, a state in southwestern India, was formed as Mysore State in 1956 and renamed in 1973. Bordered by the Lakshadweep Sea, Goa, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, it comprises 31 districts. With a population of over 61 million as of the 2011 census, its capital, Bangalore, is the largest city, home to over 15 million residents.
Karnataka’s administrative structure is organized into four revenue divisions, 49 sub-divisions, and 31 districts. These districts are further divided into 175 taluks, which are local administrative units, and 745 hoblies or revenue circles, serving as the basic units of revenue administration. This hierarchical system helps manage the state’s governance and development efficiently across its vast and diverse regions.
Karnataka’s literacy rate, according to the latest population census, is 75.36%. This includes a male literacy rate of 82.47% and a female literacy rate of 68.08%. While the state’s overall literacy is commendable, the gap between male and female literacy highlights the need for continued efforts to promote education and bridge gender disparities in access to learning.
Yadgir, with a population of 1,174,271, has the lowest literacy rate in Karnataka at 51.83%. Of its population, 510,003 are literate. This district faces significant educational challenges, with literacy levels far below the state average, underscoring the need for targeted efforts to improve access to education and overall literacy.
Yadgir, historically known as Yetagiri, is renowned for its rich history and heritage. The district features a hill fort with three rounds of fortifications, ancient temples, medieval mosques, and historic tanks and wells. Yadgir is also famous for the Kodekal Basavanna Temple, dedicated to Saint Kodekal Basawanna, a follower of the 12th-century philosopher Saint Basavanna, known for his teachings and writings on divine knowledge.
