Odisha, a state in eastern India, is known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes. However, like many regions in India, it faces challenges in terms of literacy and education. Among its districts, Nabarangapur has the lowest literacy rate. This article explores the factors contributing to Nabarangapur’s low literacy levels and the efforts being made to improve the situation.
Odisha, formerly known as Orissa, is an Indian state in Eastern India, bordered by Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh. It is the eighth-largest state by area and eleventh by population, with over 41 million residents. Odisha has a 485-kilometer coastline along the Bay of Bengal and is home to the third-largest population of Scheduled Tribes in India. The official language, Odia, is one of India’s Classical languages.
Odisha is divided into 30 districts, organized into three administrative divisions. Each district plays a crucial role in the state’s governance and development. The capital and largest city, Bhubaneswar, serves as the administrative hub. These districts vary in size, population, and cultural diversity, reflecting the state’s rich heritage and complex socio-economic landscape. This division helps manage the state’s vast resources and ensures efficient local governance.
Odisha’s literacy rate has improved to 72.87%, according to the latest census. Male literacy is notably higher at 81.59%, while female literacy stands at 64.01%. This upward trend reflects ongoing efforts to enhance education across the state, though disparities between genders remain.
Nabarangapur, a district in Odisha, has the state’s lowest literacy rate at 46.43%. With a population of 1,220,946, only 470,379 people are literate. This highlights the significant educational challenges the district faces, especially in providing access to quality education for its residents.
Malkangiri is the second district in Odisha with the lowest literacy rate, standing at 49.49%. Despite its population of 612,727, the district struggles with educational access, particularly in its remote and tribal areas, making it a key focus for literacy improvement efforts.
