Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, had a population of 199,812,341 as per the 2011 census, making up approximately 16.5% of India’s total population. Besides its large population, Uttar Pradesh is also the state with the highest number of districts in India. Each district in the state has its own unique characteristics, contributing to the rich cultural, religious, and historical tapestry of the region.
Uttar Pradesh is divided into 75 districts, which are organized into 18 divisions. The state also comprises 822 community development blocks, 5 special area development authorities, 351 tehsils, and 17 municipal corporations.
The largest district in Uttar Pradesh by area is Lakhimpur Kheri, spanning 7,680 square kilometers. In contrast, the smallest district is Hapur, covering just 660 square kilometers. Other notable districts include Ballia in the east, Saharanpur in the north, Sonbhadra in the south, and Shamli in the west.
Among the many districts, Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, is home to the historic Sher Darwaza. This gate is located 100 meters from the Health Building Chauraha on the road leading to the Rai Umanath Bali Auditorium in Kaiserbagh.
The Sher Darwaza is approximately 150 years old and is adorned with the figure of a lion. It stands as a testament to India’s struggle for independence. The gate witnessed significant events during the revolt against British rule. Notably, it was the site of a fierce two-day battle between the Indian revolutionaries and the British army led by General Neil. General Neil was killed in this conflict, and thus the gate is also known as the Neil Darwaza.
