DRDO Successfully Tests Ballistic Missile Defence and NASM-MR Missile

Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully conducted three consecutive missile tests on 10th and 11h, 2026. The trials included the advanced Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) interceptor missiles and the maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR).

DRDO’s Major Missile Trials: What Happened?

The Defense Research and Development Organization has conducted the three important missile flight tests aims to strengthen the India’s strategic defense capabilities.

This trials involved the interceptor missiles capable of neutralizing Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs) and the first successful flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR).

The successful demonstrations validated the key technologies associated with missile interception, tracking systems and naval strike operations.

These tests are considered as the major achievement under the India’s indigenous defence modernization efforts.

Key Highlights

  • DRDO has conducted the three consecutive missile tests on June 10 and 11, 2026.
  • Tests included the Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) interceptor missiles.
  • Maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR) was successfully also completed.
  • BMD interceptors are designed to neutralize the Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs).
  • Interceptors can operate in the both exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric environments.
  • NASM-MR is also designed to engage enemy surface naval targets.
  • Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has congratulated the DRDO on the achievement.

Understanding India’s Ballistic Missile Defence System

Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) is the multi-layered defense system designed to detect, track, intercept and destroy incoming ballistic missiles before they reach to their intended targets.

The system uses the advanced radars, command-and-control networks and interceptor missiles to neutralize the threats at the different stages of flight.

India’s BMD architecture is designed to provide the protection against missile attacks by engaging with the hostile missiles both outside and inside Earth’s atmosphere.

The successful tests also indicate the growing maturity in the India’s missile defense shield and strategic deterrence capabilities.

What is Exo-Atmospheric and Endo-Atmospheric Interception?

One of the most important aspects of the modern missile defense systems is the layered interception.

Exo-Atmospheric Interception

  • It takes place outside the Earth’s atmosphere.
  • Engages the ballistic missiles during the mid-course phase.
  • Provides an early opportunity to destroy the incoming threats.

Endo-Atmospheric Interception

  • It takes place within the atmosphere Earth.
  • Acts as the second layer of the defense.
  • Engages those missiles that escape the first interception layer.

What are Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs)?

Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs) are ballistic missiles with the range between 2,000 km and 5,000 km.

The ballistic missiles are classified based on their operational range.

Missile Type Range

  • Short-Range Ballistic Missile (SRBM): Up to 1,000 km
  • Medium-Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM): 1,000-,000 km
  • Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM): 2,000-5,000 km
  • Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM): Above 5,500 km

IRBMs pose the significant strategic challenges because they can target distant military and the civilian infrastructure within a region.
