“E. K. Janaki Ammal: Life and Scientific Contributions” authored by Nirmala James

Retired school teacher Nirmala James has authored a new book titled “E. K. Janaki Ammal: Life and Scientific Contributions”, featuring the life and remarkable achievements of Edavalath Kakkat Janaki Ammal (E. K. Janaki Ammal), India’s first woman botanist. The book, published by Enview Research and Development, was released during the event organised on the 125th birth anniversary of E. K. Janaki Ammal. She was born on 4th November 1897 in Thalassery, Kerala. The event was organised by the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (CBC) under the Botany Department, University of Kerala.

E. K. Janaki Ammal: Life and Scientific Contributions: Essence of the book:

  • The book describes how Dr Janaki Ammal fulfilled her professional dreams despite the gender and caste barriers. She is well known for her work in the areas of cytogenetics and plant breeding. Nirmala James has authored around 25 books including books for children.
  • This book provides insights into the life and contributions of E. K. Janaki Ammal, one of the most coveted women scientists in India. The book narrates several interesting insights from the dairy of Janaki Ammal’s father Krishnan, and the author’s own findings travelling through the paths Janaki Ammal took. The book is an enhanced translation from the Malayalam version of the book the author released in 2020.
