In February 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Surat and dedicated to the nation two Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), KAPS-3 and KAPS-4. Built by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), these projects have a cumulative capacity of 1400 megawatts and are the largest indigenous PHWRs in India.
According to official releases, the KAPS-3 and KAPS-4 reactors are the first-of-their-kind in India, incorporating advanced safety features that are comparable to the best in the world. These reactors were constructed at a cost of more than Rs. 22,500 crore, showcasing India’s commitment to developing safe and efficient nuclear power generation capabilities.
