Following the 2022 EPI, in which India ranked 180 out of 180 countries, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change dismissed the results as the data was based on a number of indicators which the agency believed were based on assumptions that do not hold, data extrapolation, or unsuitable methods that do not appropriately capture the position of India regarding its environmental performance.
