Hamas Agrees to Disarm Under Trump’s Board of Peace Plan: Key Details, Ceasefire Terms and What It Means
US President Donald Trump stated that the Peace Board has come up with an agreement for the full disarmament of Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza. A senior member of the Hamas leadership confirmed that the organization has agreed to the proposal and stated that an official announcement will be made afterwards. Although the news raised optimism regarding the long-term ceasefire, Israel has not yet agreed to the deal, meaning that its realization will depend on further talks and verification.
The Board of Peace is an initiative that has the support of the US and is designed to promote a long-lasting resolution in Gaza after months of negotiations with regional mediators.
As per the Board, the agreement marks the end of a long period of negotiations and the implementation phase has been started. The initiative is part of the second phase of the US-brokered Gaza ceasefire framework involving security arrangements, governance changes, humanitarian recovery, and reconstruction.
It is reported that the initiative has been facilitated by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.
The suggested framework presents some crucial obligations intended to go beyond a mere ceasefire.
Some of its key features includes,
US officials state that the process will base on verifications, and neither side will take steps towards the next stage unless its obligations are fulfilled.
President Donald Trump referred to the deal as a significant step in putting into action his 20-Point Peace Plan concerning Gaza.
According to Trump,
Trump also expressed his gratitude to Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey for their mediatory functions and was sure that Israel would comply with its obligations under the general peace plan.
A high ranking official in Hamas has told reporters that the group agrees with the disarmament plan and that an announcement would be made shortly.
As reported, Hamas has accepted,
Nevertheless, it will take quite a long time to carry out dismantling of tunnels, weapons storages, and military infrastructure.
Though the details have been disclosed, Israel has not officially accepted the deal.
Several media reports citing Israeli officials revealed that the government expressed its concerns about particular provisions of the deal.
Specifically, it has been claimed that the representatives of the Israeli authorities believe that the terms suggested do not fully satisfy the country’s security requirements.
Thus, the official response of the Israeli government is expected to decide whether the deal has been implemented or not.
According to the US officials, the entire mechanism for execution is assumed to be implemented through the “zero trust” verification method.
The suggested plan proceeds as follows,
The current conflict started on October 7th, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing about 1200 people and recalling 251 hostages.
Israel started a large military operation in Gaza in response. As per the reports from the Gaza Health Ministry, controlled by Hamas, more than 73000 Palestinians have died in the fighting.
The United Nations has said that the numbers of the ministry are corroborated, although Israel raises concerns about some of the information from Gaza authorities.
The fighting has been characterized by heavy humanitarian devastation and numerous attempts to achieve agreements on ceasefire and hostage release by the international community
