Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz clinched victory at the Australian Grand Prix

Australian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz of Ferrari emerged victorious, marking a remarkable comeback just two weeks after undergoing appendicitis surgery. The race was filled with drama, including the first retirement in two years for Red Bull’s reigning world champion Max Verstappen.

Fending Off the Competition

Sainz, who secured the only non-Red Bull victory last season, fended off tough competition from his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. The race took a dramatic turn on the final lap when Mercedes driver George Russell crashed, triggering a virtual safety car. This cleared the way for Sainz to secure a decisive win.

Podium Finishers

Lando Norris of McLaren claimed third place, earning his first podium of the season. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, finished a impressive fourth. Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate, could not apply enough pressure on the leaders and settled for fifth place.

Championship Standings

Despite his retirement, Verstappen remains top of the standings, leading Leclerc by four points. Leclerc claimed an extra point for setting the fastest lap of the race. Perez trails Leclerc by a single point in third place.

Sainz is 11 points back from Verstappen in fourth position, but he would likely have been the world championship leader had he not missed the second round in Jeddah due to his surgery.

In the constructors’ standings, Ferrari has closed the gap on Red Bull to just four points.

Dramatic Comeback

Sainz’s victory in Australia marks a remarkable comeback for the Spanish driver. Just two weeks ago, he was recovering from appendicitis surgery, which forced him to miss the previous race. His triumph in Melbourne showcases his resilience and determination, as he overcame adversity to claim a stunning victory on the Formula One stage.

The Australian Grand Prix lived up to its reputation as a thrilling and unpredictable race, with drama unfolding until the very end. Sainz’s triumph, coupled with Verstappen’s unexpected retirement, has added an exciting twist to the 2024 Formula One season.
