Breaking Gender Barriers

In the early 1900s, acting was a domain largely restricted to men and women were rarely seen on stage or in front of the camera. However, after the movie’s success, the door for female actresses was pushed open. In 1913, Dadasaheb Phalke introduced Durgabai Kamat as the leading lady Parvati in his second film, “Mohini Bhasmasur.” Remarkably, her daughter, Kamlabai Gokhale portrayed the character of Mohini, marking her as the first female child actress in Indian cinema. This historic moment heralded a new era for women in the film industry, paving the way for countless female talents to follow in their footsteps.
