Mukerjee was among the first six Indians selected for flying training at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell. After completing his training, he returned to India and became one of the earliest officers of the Indian Air Force, which was established in 1932. He was one of the founding members of the IAF and served in various capacities throughout his career.
On 1 April 1954, Subroto Mukerjee became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force. With India gaining independence in 1947, Mukerjee took over the leadership role as the IAF transitioned from a colonial auxiliary force to an independent and modern air force.
