Kamaljeet Kaur Sandhu made history by becoming the first Indian woman athlete to win an individual gold medal at the Asian Games. She achieved this remarkable feat in the 1970 Bangkok Asian Games, where she won the 400-meter race in 57.3 seconds.
Born on 20 August 1948 in Firozpur, Punjab, Kamaljeet developed a passion for athletics at an early age. Apart from athletics, she also excelled in basketball and hockey at the national level. Her athletic career reached its peak when she participated in various international events, including the 1972 Munich Olympics.
In 1971, Kamaljeet was a finalist in the World University Games held in Turin, Italy, in the 400 meters event. The following year, she competed in the Munich Olympics but bowed out during the heats. For her achievements, Kamaljeet was honored with the Padma Shri in 1971.
After retiring in 1973, Kamaljeet transitioned into coaching. She served as the coach for the Indian women’s sprint team at the 1982 Asian Games. Her contributions to Indian athletics continue to inspire many young athletes today.
