Former West Indies batter Joe Solomon dies at 93

Joe Solomon, the former West Indies and Guyana cricket player, has passed away at the age of 93. Solomon was a big part of West Indies cricket in the late 1950s and 1960s, and he’s remembered for his amazing performances on the field.

Early Success and Quick Rise

Joe Solomon started playing cricket when he was 26, which is a bit later than most players. But he made a spectacular entrance into the game by scoring three centuries in his first matches: 114 not out against Jamaica, 108 against Barbados, and 121 against the touring Pakistan team. This impressive start got him into the West Indies team for the tour of India. In only his fourth Test, he scored a fantastic unbeaten century in Delhi, with an average of 117 in the series.

Unforgettable Tied Test

One of Solomon’s most memorable moments was in the historic tied Test against Australia in 1960 at the Gabba. In a super close finish, Australia needed six runs off the last eight balls with three wickets in hand. It looked like they would win, but Solomon’s accurate throw caught a player out of his crease, resulting in the first-ever tied Test.
Strong Numbers

During his career from 1958 to 1965, Solomon played 27 Tests and scored 1326 runs with an average of 34. Even though he started playing at a later age, he quickly became a key player for West Indies.

Melbourne Incident

While Solomon is celebrated for the tied Test, he also had a bit of a funny moment during the tour. In a match in Melbourne, he got out in a unique way—his cap fell onto the stumps, causing a bit of a stir.
Saying Goodbye

As we remember Joe Solomon, we honor a cricket legend whose impact will be felt for a long time. His skill, determination, and fair play have left a lasting mark on the game. Although he is no longer with us, his contributions to West Indies cricket will be cherished by fans around the world.
