His spiritual influence extended beyond India, particularly to a group of Americans who journeyed to India during the 1960s and 1970s. Among his well-known disciples were the spiritual teachers Ram Dass and Bhagavan Das, as well as the musicians Krishna Das and Jai Uttal. Neem Karoli Baba established ashrams in various locations, including Kainchi, Vrindavan, Rishikesh, Shimla, Neem Karoli village near Khimasepur in Farrukhabad, Bhumiadhar, Hanumangarhi, and Delhi in India, as well as Taos, New Mexico, in the United States.

Lakshman Narayan Sharma was born in the early 1900s in Akbarpur, a village located in the Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh, India. He was born into a prosperous Brahmin family. At the age of 11, his parents arranged his marriage, but he chose a different path and decided to become a wandering sadhu (ascetic). However, upon his father’s request, he eventually returned home to lead a settled married life. He had two sons and a daughter.

Neem Karoli Baba passed away around 1:15 AM on September 11, 1973, in a hospital located in Vrindavan, India. His demise occurred after he fell into a diabetic coma. Prior to his passing, he had been traveling by night train from Agra to Kainchi near Nainital. During the journey, he experienced chest pains and visited a heart specialist in Agra. However, upon arriving at the Mathura railway station, he began to convulse and requested to be taken to Shri Dham Vrindavan. It was at the hospital in Vrindavan where he eventually left his mortal body.

  • Undeterred by this incident, Neem Karoli Baba quietly left the train and found solace under a nearby tree. However, to everyone’s surprise, the train refused to move despite the engine driver’s efforts to make it go faster.
  • Many inspections were carried out, only to reveal that the train was in perfect working order. Indian passengers on the train then informed the ticket collector that the train would not move because he had removed a holy man from it. The ticket collector, initially skeptical of such beliefs, felt embarrassed but decided to call the holy man back onto the train.
  • Neem Karoli Baba returned to the train silently, just as he had left, and astonishingly, the train immediately started moving again.
  • This incident led to the establishment of a proper station at that very spot. Neem Karoli Baba became renowned for his miraculous abilities and performed many more extraordinary acts until he passed away in 1973.

In simpler terms, the ashram was built around an ordinary-looking man with extraordinary spiritual powers named Neem Karoli Baba. He was discovered without a ticket on a train and was thrown out. The train refused to move until he was allowed back on board. This incident led to the creation of a station at that spot, and Neem Karoli Baba became famous for his miracles until he passed away in 1973.
