Germany Retain Hockey World Cup Title With 1-0 Win

Germany won the World Cup for the second consecutive time, beating Spain 1-0 in a close match in the final of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup at the Belfius Hockey Arena. With the win, Germany won the World Cup for the fourth time in their history and they are now level with Pakistan as the most successful side in the World Cup competition history. Germany scored the only goal through Michel Struthoff in the 44th minute and they held on to that goal throughout the game even though Spain tried their best to get an equalizer.

Germany Tie as Most Successful Team in World Cup Competition History

Germany won their fourth Men’s Hockey World Cup title. Their earlier victories were in 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, 2006 in Mönchengladbach and 2023 in Bhubaneswar.

Pakistan won four titles of the Men’s Hockey World Cup earlier and they have been in 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994. Hence, with the current victory, Germany is tied with Pakistan at the top of the list.

Spain failed to win a World Cup for the third time. Spain played its third final in the history and the last one was in 1998.

The Match-Winning Moment by Struthoff

The match began with both sides focusing on defensive work. Germany took the first penalty corner in the second minute, but Benedikt Schwarzhaupt missed it due to the Spanish goalkeeper.

Spain also had its first penalty corner in the ninth minute, but Borja Lacalle could not score.

Neither team managed to score in the first half-hour of the match. Germany dominated possession, and Spain used small passes and teamwork to find space.

Before the half-time whistle, the closest shot to goal was scored by Teo Hinrichs who got the ball in the dangerous position, but his shot was saved. Another shot followed, but the attack did not lead to any score.

Spain and Germany went to the break with the same score 0-0.

Germany Wins Under Pressure from Spain

Spain started the second half more confidently and put pressure on Germany. In the 39th minute, Spain received another penalty corner when Pol Verdiell Cabre was fouled inside the circle.

The captain Marc Miralles tried to win the match by the drag flick, but he hit the ball wide.

Then Germany showed the decisive play in the match.

In the 44th minute, coordinated actions of both wings made space for Michel Struthoff. With the Spanish goalkeeper out of position, he managed to deflect the ball into the goal to make the first goal for Germany.

Spain made 10 attacks in the third quarter of the game.

Spain’s Late Efforts Fall Short

After conceding a goal, Spain kept applying pressure and managed to earn another penalty corner in the 45th minute of the match. A flick from Miralles hit Prinz Thies, the first German runner in the way.

With just four minutes remaining, Spain’s coach Max Caldas made the bold decision to pull his goalkeeper Luiz Calzado in favor of an extra attacker, but his gamble did not pay off because they were unable to score.

Germany clinched the victory and won yet another title in the World Cup.

Argentina Win Bronze Medal

Argentina won the bronze medal after beating the Netherlands 2-1 in the bronze medal match.

The early lead for Argentina came courtesy of a penalty corner by Tomás Domene in the 41st minute, after which Dutch midfielder Floris Middendorp equalized in the 49th minute, putting his team back in the game. Afterward, Mathias Rey, the captain of Argentina scored the winning penalty corner in the 59th minute.

This victory is special for Rey because it was his sixth World Cup.
