Global Wind Day 2026: India Charts Roadmap to 100 GW Wind Energy Capacity

India will celebrates the Global Wind Day 2026 with the renewed focus on expanding the wind power generation. As India is world’s one of the leading renewable energy markets, it steadily strengthening the its wind energy ecosystem via the capacity expansion, domestic manufacturing, offshore development and the international partnerships. The theme of this year is the ‘Wind Energy: From Ambition to Acceleration’ and it reflects the India’s determination to transform the its vast wind resources into a cornerstone of the its clean energy future.

Global Wind Day 2026

Global Wind Day is observed every year on 15th June and this day raise awareness about the importance of the wind energy to combating the climate change and ensuring sustainable development.

India will host the Global Wind Day 2026 Conference in the Goa and it will bring together the key stakeholders from across the renewable energy sector.

Representatives from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE), Grid India, state governments and industry associations will participate in the event.

India’s Vast Wind Energy Potential

India possesses the one of the largest wind energy resources in the world.

According to the assessments, the country’s gross wind power potential stands at the,

• 695.5 GW at 120 metres hub height
• 1,163.9 GW at 150 metres hub height

A significant portion of this potential is concentrated in to eight states in India and they are,

• Rajasthan – 284.2 GW
• Gujarat – 180.8 GW
• Maharashtra – 173.9 GW
• Karnataka – 169.3 GW
• Andhra Pradesh – 123.3 GW
• Tamil Nadu – 95.1 GW
• Madhya Pradesh – 55.4 GW
• Telangana – 54.7 GW

To support the resource assessment, around more than 900 wind monitoring stations have been established across the country.

India’s Wind Capacity Reaches New Milestones

India currently ranks fourth worldwide in the installed wind power capacity.

The country’s installed wind energy capacity has grown significantly from 21.04 GW in March 2014 to 56.09 GW in the March 2026 and it representing the 2.66-fold increase over the last decade.

Another 28 GW of wind projects are currently under the implementation which indicates the strong growth momentum.

The year 2025-26 marked the record-breaking achievement with India adding 6.05 GW of new wind capacity and it is the highest annual addition ever recorded in the country.

Also an important advantage of the wind power is that nearly 45% of wind generation occurs during peak electricity demand hours which complements the solar energy and enhancing grid stability.

Strengthening the Domestic Manufacturing

India has emerged as the major manufacturing hub for the wind energy equipment.

The country’s wind turbine manufacturing capacity has also increased from the 10 GW in 2014 to approximately 24 GW in the year 2026.

The sector has achieved an impressive 70-80% indigenization across the key components which includes the,

• Wind turbine blades
• Towers
• Gearboxes
• Electrical systems
• Critical engineering equipment

The strong domestic supply chain has not only reduced the import dependence but it has also created opportunities for exports to global markets.

Offshore Wind and Emerging Growth Areas

India is now focusing on to expanding the wind energy deployment beyond traditional states.

Emerging regions such as the Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha are expected to play the larger role in future capacity additions.

The country is also preparing to launch the its offshore wind sector with the identified leasing areas in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu expected to attract significant investment and technological innovation.

Global Partnerships Supporting India’s Wind Ambitions

International cooperation remains as a crucial component of the India’s wind energy strategy.

The India-UK Offshore Wind Taskforce which was launched in February 2026 and it focuses on financing, infrastructure, supply chains and market development.

At the World Economic Forum 2026, India and Belgium strengthened the cooperation in offshore wind technology, research and sustainable financing frameworks.

India’s renewable energy partnership with the Denmark continues to support offshore wind capacity building, power system modelling and renewable energy integration via the technical cooperation and training programs.

Road to 100 GW

India’s energy transition strategy increasingly relies on to the wind power as a reliable source of clean electricity.

Future growth will depend on the faster project implementation, stronger transmission infrastructure, AI-driven forecasting systems and the expanded offshore development.
