GoI appoints Sangeeta Verma as acting chairperson of CCI

The government of India appointed Sangeeta Verma as the acting chairperson of the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The appointment follows full-time Chairperson Ashok Kumar Gupta demitting office. Verma is currently a member at the regulator. Her appointment will be effective for a “period of three months or till the appointment of regular Chairperson or till any further orders, whichever is the earliest,” according to an official order. Ashok Kumar Gupta had taken over as the CCI chairperson in November 2018.

The career of Dr Sangeeta Verma:

  • Dr Sangeeta Verma, a 1981 batch of the Indian Economic Service (IES), is currently a member of the regulator (CCI). She joined the CCI as a member on 24th December 2018.
  • She has thorough experience over 3 decades in Government (Central & State), as an economist, administrator, regulator, and policymaker. She has served the government in several sectors of the economy, including consumer affairs, industry, agriculture, power, and women and child development.
  • She has served as Secretary of the U. P. State Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC), and Economic Adviser with the Central Electricity Authority, Ministry of Power (MoP). She has also served as the Principal Adviser in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (now the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade – DPIIT).
  • Sangeeta Verma also served as a Member of the Appellate Authority for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction, which settled on appeals against orders of the former Board for Industrial Financial Reconstruction (BIFR).

Competition Commission of India (CCI):

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) was established under the Competition Act, of 2002 for the administration, implementation and enforcement of the Act.  It was constituted in March 2009.

Members of the CCI:

  • It consists of 7 members; one Chairperson and six other members.
  • The members are appointed by the government for five years and are re-eligible for appointments.
  • However, the members have to retire after attaining the age of sixty-five years.
