Government Launches Fire Safety Week 2026 to Improve Hospital Safety Standards

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched the Fire Safety Week 2026 from May 4 to May 10, 2026. This initiative will began with a nationwide pledge which is led by Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava which highlights the urgent need for improved safety standards in hospitals. Along with this Fire Safety Week the central government has also introduced the comprehensive National Guidelines on Fire and Life Safety in Healthcare Facilities.

Key Focus of The Fire Safety Week 2026

This week-long campaign will have strong emphasis on the theme of ‘Safe Schools, Safe Hospitals, and a Fire-Safety Aware Society: Together for Fire Prevention.’

This initiative reflects the nationwide effort involving the,

  • Central ministries and the departments.
  • State governments and Union Territories.
  • Public and private healthcare institutions.

The campaign is also designed to create awareness, accountability and preparedness to handling fire emergencies and specially in critical healthcare environments.

New National Guidelines 2026 & Strong Framework

The major highlight of this initiative is the launch of updated fire safety guidelines for the healthcare facilities. These guidelines also provide a comprehensive framework to address the fire risks systematically.

Core Areas To Be Covered Under Framework 

  • Governance and compliance mechanisms
  • Risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
  • Infrastructure planning and fire-resistant design
  • Emergency response systems and evacuation protocols
  • Training and capacity building of the healthcare staff

Special emphasis has been placed on the high-risk zones includes,

  • Intensive Care Units (ICUs)
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs)
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs)
  • Operation Theatres (OTs)

These areas are set to require strict safety protocols due to the presence of the critical equipment and vulnerable patients.

Nationwide Activities to Boost Preparedness

During the Fire Safety Week the wide range of activities are being conducted across the India to strengthen readiness.

Major Activities Includes the

  • The fire safety audits in hospitals
  • Mock drills and evacuation exercises
  • Live demonstrations of the fire detection and suppression systems
  • Technical webinars on the best practices
  • Awareness campaigns in the medical colleges

These activities will also aim to ensure the both healthcare professionals and administrators are well-trained to handle the emergencies effectively.

Role of Leadership and Institutions

Respectable Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava have emphasized that fire safety is a shared responsibility and called for the regular audits and compliance monitoring through the IHIP portal.

Also the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) which is represented by Krishna S. Vatsa has highlighted the need for a proactive and systems-based approach.

NDMA also plans to conduct the regional programs to enhance capacity building at state and district levels.
