Gujarat's Unjha Cumin and Unjha Fennel Receive GI Tag in 2026: Complete List of 31 GI Tags of Gujarat
Gujarat has secured its position as a frontrunner among India’s states with Geographical Indication (GI) when two products, Unjha Cumin (Jeera) and Unjha Fennel (Saunf), have been included in the GI Registry in 2026. For their unique quality, origin, and reputation in international spice trade, they have been awarded the GI Tag.
With this development, Gujarat currently has in total 31 GI products composed of foodstuffs, crafts, natural products, machinery, etc. GI registration means not only preservation of traditional knowledge but also enhancement of the farmers incomes and improvement of the state’s export opportunities.
In July 2026, both Unjha Cumin (Jeera) and Unjha Fennel (Saunf) were awarded the GI Tag by the GI Registry of India.
The achievement is significant for the Gujarat’s agricultural sector. The spice-growing region of Unjha is considered one of the key spice trading centers of India.
The GI tag highlights the special aroma, flavor, quality, and methods of cultivation that make Unjha’s cumin and fennel distinguishable from similar products in the market.
As of 2026, Gujarat has total 31 registered Geographical Indication products across the four major categories.

The GI tag gives recognition to the Unjha globally while protecting the originality of its products against counterfeit.
A Geographical Indication (GI) Tag refers to an intellectual property right used to identify goods that originate from a particular geographical location and whose features, reputation or qualities relate to that geographical location.
In India, the GI tags are conferred according to the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 and administered by the Geographical Indications Registry located in Chennai.
This certification aims to guard against misappropriation of local products, protect traditional knowledge, as well as boost the local economy.
