Gukesh Etches Name in Chess History as Youngest Challenger

In a remarkable achievement, Indian chess prodigy Dommaraju Gukesh, aged just 17, has made history by winning the FIDE Candidates tournament, becoming the youngest-ever challenger in the history of the World Chess Championship. Not only that, but Gukesh is also the first teenager to win the prestigious tournament.

Stellar Performance at Candidates

Gukesh’s stellar performance at the Candidates tournament saw him score an impressive 9/14, finishing in first place. With this victory, he becomes only the second Indian after the legendary Viswanathan Anand to win the coveted tournament, securing his place as the challenger for the World Chess Championship later this year.

The Battle for the Crown

Gukesh will now face the formidable Ding Liren in an epic clash to determine the next world chess champion. The teenager’s remarkable journey to the Candidates tournament and his subsequent triumph have defied all odds and expectations.

Unfazed by Formidable Opponents

In a field featuring two of the world’s top three players and a two-time World Championship challenger, Gukesh was not given much of a chance in his first Candidates appearance. However, the young Indian has turned the odds on their head, playing exceptional chess, remaining unruffled under pressure, and displaying a level of maturity and calm far beyond his years.

Decisive Final Round

Going into the final round of the Candidates tournament, the situation was tense, with Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Hikaru Nakamura all needing victories to stay alive. As the sole leader, Gukesh needed only a draw against World No. 3 Nakamura and a drawn result in the Caruana-Nepomniachtchi game. Remarkably, both of these conditions were met, paving the way for his historic triumph.
