Haryana Launches Innovative Savera Program for Early Breast Cancer Detection

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated the Savera program, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at early detection and prevention of breast cancer in women. Developed in collaboration with the Medanta Foundation and the Health Department, Savera leverages the unique ability of visually impaired women to conduct breast cancer screenings.

Harnessing Tactile Sensitivity for Early Detection

The program capitalizes on the naturally heightened tactile sensitivity possessed by visually impaired individuals. As highlighted by CM Khattar, they can detect breast cancer up to half a centimeter, whereas a normal doctor can detect it up to one centimeter, after examination. This enhanced ability allows for earlier detection of potential abnormalities, leading to improved treatment outcomes.

Pilot Phase and Expansion Plans

Savera is currently in its initial phase, with screenings being conducted at:

  • Civil Hospital, Sector 10
  • Polyclinic, Sector 31
  • Primary Health Center (PHC), Wazirabad

The program’s success in these locations will pave the way for wider implementation across the state.

Addressing a Critical Public Health Concern

Breast cancer remains a significant public health concern, particularly in urban areas. CM Khattar emphasized the program’s importance, stating that around 90,000 women across the country lose their lives due to breast cancer, daily. Savera aims to address this challenge by facilitating early detection and timely intervention.

Complementary Efforts in Cancer Care

The launch of Savera coincides with the establishment of the National Cancer Institute at AIIMS Jhajjar, equipped with 1,000 beds. This comprehensive approach signifies Haryana’s commitment to providing accessible and advanced cancer care to its citizens.

Savera represents a significant step forward in Haryana’s fight against breast cancer. By harnessing the unique capabilities of visually impaired individuals and promoting early detection, the program has the potential to save countless lives and improve the well-being of women across the state.
