HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to Retire on October 26

Sashidhar Jagdishan, the MD & CEO of HDFC Bank, is set to retire from the bank from October 26th, 2026, as he has decided not to renew his contract for the another term. Noting his decision in the meeting held on August 29, the board of directors of HDFC Bank stated that their attempts to convince him to remain on his post have been unsuccessful. Such changes in the leadership of India’s biggest privately-owned bank are taking place against the backdrop of investors’ close attention to its governance and leadership transitions.

Jagdishan’s Term as HDFC Bank’s MD & CEO

Since October 2020, Sashidhar Jagdishan has held the position of MD & CEO of HDFC Bank, succeeding Aditya Puri who served in this role for over two decades.

One of the major events of Jagdishan’s term as HDFC Bank’s MD & CEO has been the completion of the merger between HDFC Bank and HDFC Ltd.

After Jagdishan’s decision, HDFC Bank has announced that the board of directors will expedite the process of selecting and appointing his successor.

The Role of Transition in Leadership

The declaration was made amid the renewed scrutiny of HDFC Bank’s hierarchy and management structure.

The resignation of the previous head of the bank, Atanu Chakraborty, happened in March due to his dissatisfaction with the bank’s decision-making processes, which contradicted his values.

However, this review has revealed that Chakraborty was not justified in his suspicions.

Additionally, there was an internal audit conducted with respect to the issue of connection between the bank and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation relating to the deposits in the years 2017 and 2021. The purpose of this audit was to assess the transactions conducted in the period given.

It was brought to attention that the necessity to do so arose from an internal inspection of how the corporation was using bank deposits. Initially, the board issued warning letters to three executives and introduced certain financial penalties at ₹ 1 lakh for each of the members of the bank.

What Happens Next?

Jagdishan will be staying with the bank until October 26, 2026. At the same time, the focus now shifts onto finding and hiring his successor.

Leadership change is crucial for the multitude of private banks due to their specific ownership model.
