Himachal Becomes First State to Use Face ID for Ration
Himachal Pradesh has become the first state in India to start Aadhaar-based face authentication (FaceAuth) for giving ration under the Public Distribution System (PDS). This new method began in July 2025 and makes it easier and quicker for people to prove their identity. It also solves problems faced earlier with OTP and fingerprint verification.
The Himachal Pradesh government has started using a new method to check the identity of ration card holders using FaceAuth, which scans a person’s face using a smartphone camera. This system is connected to their Aadhaar number and replaces older methods like fingerprints or OTP (one-time passwords), which often failed due to poor mobile network or mismatched fingerprints.
The new face authentication is done through a mobile app installed on the Fair Price Shop (FPS) dealer’s phone. When a beneficiary comes to collect ration, their face is scanned through the app and matched with their Aadhaar details.
Earlier, OTP-based verification often failed because of SMS delivery issues, especially in remote hilly areas. Biometric fingerprint scans also didn’t work properly in many cases due to errors at the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) system or due to worn-out fingerprints.
To solve this, the Department of Digital Technologies and Governance (DDTG) of Himachal Pradesh developed and introduced the FaceAuth system. The aim is to make ration distribution faster, easier, and more reliable for all eligible people.
Gokul Butail, Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister, said this move is a major digital step for improving public service delivery. He stated that the FaceAuth system will increase the success rate of authentication and reduce the time taken to get ration.
The state government believes this new method will help more people get their ration without delay and promote inclusive and smooth access to essential food supplies. This system is expected to be used widely across all Fair Price Shops in the state in the coming months.
