Holi 2025 Date: Holi and Holika Dahan 2025

Holi, known as the “Festivals of Colours,” is one of the most joyful Hindu festivals. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India and many other countries. The festival lasts for two days – Holika Dahan on the first day and Rangwali Holi on the second day. Holi marks the victory of good over evil and is celebrated with bonfires, colors, music, dance and sweets.

Two Days of Holi Celebration

  • Holika Dahan: The first day of Holi is known as Holika Dahan, Chhoti Holi or Jalawali Holi. On this day, people light a bonfire to burn Holika, a symbol of the victory of good over evil. Families gather around the fire, pray and perform rituals to remove negative energy from their lives.
  • Rangwali Holi: The second day is called Rangwali Holi, Dhulandi or the main day of Holi. People play with gulaal (dry colors), water balloons, and colored water. Friends and families celebrate together with music, dance and sweets like gujiya and malpura.

Why is Holika Dahan Celebrated?

Holi is linked to a famous story from Hindu mythology. According to the legend, a demon king Hiranyakashyap wanted everyone to worship him. However, his son Prahlad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. This made Hiranyakashyap angry, and he planned to kill Prahlad.

Hiranyakashyap’s sister Holika had a magical shawl that protected her from fire. She tricked Prahlad into sitting on her lap inside a burning fire. But, due to his faith in Lord Vishnu, Prahlad survived, while Holika was burnt to ashes. This event symbolizes the victory of truth and devotion over evil.
