In Ladakh, Colonel Geeta Rana is the first woman to command an army battalion

Colonel Geeta Rana of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers has taken over command of an independent field workshop in the Eastern Ladakh region with China after the Indian Army recently approved women officers for command posts. She is the first woman officer to do so. The Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers’ Colonel Geeta Rana is the first female officer to assume control of an Independent Field Workshop in a remote and forward area in Eastern Ladakh.

After the Army’s clearance of 108 positions for female officers to assume command of independent units in the Corps of Engineers, Ordnance, EME, and other branches, the officer has assumed control of the independent workshop for the EME. The female officers who passed the exams would be awarded leadership positions and might also be given consideration for future promotions to higher ranks in the military. Women soldiers are now being sent by the Army on peacekeeping operations and in joint training exercises with friendly foreign nations.

Women officers and troops should be given every opportunity, according to Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande, and their admittance into artillery regiments is anticipated to be approved shortly.
