Bhitarkanika Mangroves are one of the most beautiful and rich natural areas in India. This place is full of green trees, rivers and many kinds of animals and birds. It is known for its thick forests, crocodiles and peaceful surroundings. Many people visit this area to enjoy nature and learn about wildlife. Let us find out which Indian state is home to this amazing place.
Bhitarkanika Mangroves are located in the state of Odisha. They cover about 650 square kilometers and lie in the Brahmani and Baitarani river deltas, near the Bay of Bengal. This wetland is rich in biodiversity and supports a variety of life.
Before 1952, Bhitarkanika Mangroves were under private landowners called zamindars. After the zamindari system ended, the Odisha government took control. In 1975, Bhitarkanika became a wildlife sanctuary. Later in 1998, a part of it was declared Bhitarkanika National Park. In 2002, it was named a Ramsar Wetland, showing its global importance.
Bhitarkanika is home to about 62 types of mangrove trees like Avicenna, Bruguiera, and Rhizophora. Many reptiles live here, such as saltwater crocodiles, king cobras, pythons and water monitors. From 2004 to 2006, over 260 bird species were seen here, including many local and migrating birds.
One of the special visitors to this area is the Olive Ridley turtle. Every year from January to March, thousands of turtles come to Gahirmatha Beach to lay their eggs. Earlier, people used to catch them, but since 1983, it has been illegal to harm turtles or their eggs.
