History of Gorumara National Park

  • Gorumara was first decalred a reserve forest in 1895.
  • It became a wildlife sanctuary in 1949 to protect animals like the Indian rhinoceros.
  • In 1992, it was officially declared a national park.
  • Over time, the park area grew from just 7 square kilometers to nearly 80 square kilometers.

Wildlife and Nature in the Park

Gorumara is known for its Indian rhinoceroses, but also has:

  • Elephants, gaurs, deer, wild boars and leopards
  • over 190 birds species, including peacocks hornbills and flycatchers
  • Reptiles like king cobras and pythons
  • Forests filled with sal trees, bamboo, orchids and tropical plants

  • The best time to visit is from November to March when the weather is cool and pleasant.
  • The park remains closed during the monsoon (June 16 to September 15).
