INAS 334 Squadron To Welcome MH 60R ‘Seahawks’ Into The Indian Navy

The Indian Navy is poised to achieve a significant milestone on March 6, 2024, with the commissioning of the MH 60R Seahawk helicopter at INS Garuda, Kochi. This induction marks a crucial juncture in India’s defense modernization efforts, further bolstering its maritime capabilities. The Seahawks squadron will be designated as INAS 334, symbolizing a new era in naval aviation for the country. These helicopters are part of a 24-aircraft Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract inked with the US government in February 2020.

Enhancing Maritime Prowess

  • The induction of the MH 60R Seahawk heralds a significant surge in the Indian Navy’s maritime prowess.
  • Designed as a multi-role helicopter, it is equipped for various operations including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and vertical replenishment (VERTREP).
  • Rigorously tested under Indian Reference Atmosphere (IRA) conditions, these helicopters are fully integrated into the Fleet.
  • Their advanced weapons, sensors, and avionics suite cater to the diverse maritime security needs of the Indian Navy, enhancing capabilities against both conventional and asymmetric threats.

Extending Operational Reach

  • The MH 60R Seahawk will substantially augment India’s blue-water capabilities, extending the operational reach of the Navy.
  • With its deployment in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), these helicopters will support sustained naval operations across spectrums and vast maritime domains.
  • The presence of Seahawk helicopters in the IOR will not only strengthen the Indian Navy’s maritime posture but also act as a deterrent to potential threats, ensuring a secure and safe environment in this strategically crucial region.

Upholding Maritime Security

  • The commissioning of the Seahawks underscores the Indian Navy’s steadfast dedication to fortifying maritime security.
  • It aligns seamlessly with the Government of India’s visionary goal of ensuring Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).
  • By investing in advanced maritime assets like the MH 60R Seahawk, India reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding its maritime interests and contributing to regional stability.
