India-Africa Relations Explained: Why the Global South Is Becoming More Powerful

India will host the 4th India-Africa Forum Summit in New Delhi on 31st May, 2026 and will mark the diplomatic gatherings between India and African nations in the recent years. In this summit several African Heads of State and senior leaders are expected to attend and it will aims to strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, defense, technology, energy, climate action and development partnerships. The event will also showcase the India’s growing strategic engagement with Africa and also expanding economic and geopolitical ties with Global South.

India-Africa Forum Summit 2026

The upcoming summit between the India and African Nations will begin with senior officials meetings on 28 May and it is followed by a meeting of Foreign Ministers on 29 May and leaders summit on 31 May.

According to official sources the discussions during the summit will focus to expanding cooperation in multiple high priority sectors which includes,

  • Economy and trade
  • Defense and maritime security
  • Critical minerals and energy
  • Space and high technology
  • Agriculture and healthcare
  • Education and skill development
  • Climate action and renewable energy

Also a joint declaration is expected at the end of summit and it will align with India’s long term developmental goals under Vision 2047 with Africa’s continental growth roadmap which is known as Agenda 2063.

This summit will also include the think tank dialogues, cultural exchanges and an India-Africa Film Festival and it will highlighting the growing people to people ties between both sides.

Why the India-Africa Partnership Matters More Than Ever

Continent of Africa has become increasingly important in the current geopolitics, trade and energy security. With the vast natural resources a young population and fast-growing economies the continent is emerging as the major global growth centre.

India has steadily expanded the diplomatic outreach across the Africa over the past decade.

Since the year 2018, India has opened total 17 new diplomatic missions in African countries, increasing its diplomatic presence to 46 nations across the continent.

The relationship is also gaining importance because both India and African countries share similar priorities on the several issues such as,

  • Reform of global institutions
  • Climate justice
  • South-South cooperation
  • Food and energy security
  • Digital public infrastructure

Focus on Trade, Investment and Development Partnership

The Economic cooperation between India and Africa have witnessed the strong growth in recent years.

  • The current bilateral trade stands at around 85 billion dollars.
  • Also other side Africa accounts for nearly 10 percent of India’s energy imports.
  • India has provided over the 190 Lines of Credit worth more than 10 billion dollars to 41 African countries.
  • Around 220 development projects worth of 4.5 billion dollars have already been completed in many nations.
  • India is among the Africa’s top five investors and the fourth largest trading partner.

Recently, India has also signed the digital cooperation agreements with seven African nations which will support the digital governance and technology partnerships.

India’s Growing Security and Climate Role in Africa

Apart from the economic cooperation, India has also expanded the its role in defense and regional security across Africa.

India is currently contributes nearly 5,000 peacekeepers to the United Nations missions in African countries.

It has also increased the cooperation in,

  • Maritime security
  • Anti-piracy operations
  • Defense training
  • Military equipment exports

The climate and renewable energy cooperation are expected to remain the major topics during the summit. So far around 39 African countries have joined the International Solar Alliance which promotes the solar energy adoption and sustainable development.

The India-Africa Forum Summit was launched in the year 2008 as a platform to strengthening political, economic and strategic ties between the India and African nations.
