India and Philippines Sign Nine MoUs to Strengthen Strategic Partnership Across Multiple Sectors
India and the Philippines took a significant step forward in their diplomatic and strategic relationship by signing nine Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Philippines President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. These agreements mark a new phase of collaboration as both nations celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
The MoUs cover a wide range of sectors, including strategic partnership, defence, digital technology, space cooperation, maritime collaboration, tourism, and cultural exchange, as well as legal and scientific cooperation.
One of the most notable agreements is the formalisation of a Strategic Partnership between India and the Philippines. This framework aims to deepen mutual trust, security coordination, and joint engagement in regional and global forums.
A Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters was also signed to enhance cooperation in combating transnational crime, terrorism, and cybercrime.
Defence collaboration emerged as a key focus of the talks. The Philippines has been a priority partner for India’s Indigenous Defence industry, particularly in supporting the Philippines Defence Modernisation Programme. Underlined the importance of defence as a pillar of bilateral ties and over the rapid progress in defence acquisitions and training initiatives. The two nations agreed to expand joint military exercises, technology sharing, and maritime security operations in the Indo-Pacific.
The digital and technological partnership between the two countries is set to advance significantly. India will assist the Philippines in developing sovereign data cloud infrastructure, enhancing data security, and supporting the nation’s push for digital transformation.
In the space sector, the two sides agreed to collaborate in satellite technology, remote sensing, and joint research projects, contributing to disaster management and navigation systems.
Bilateral trade between India and the Philippines has grown steadily, crossing USD 3 billion. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fast-track the review of the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to further boost economic exchanges. Tourism and cultural cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. The two countries plan to host joint cultural festivals, heritage exhibitions, and tourism promotion campaigns, celebrating the shared history and people-to-people connections that date back to ancient maritime trade routes.
Given their shared interests in the Indo-Pacific, India and the Philippines agreed to enhance maritime cooperation. This includes joint patrols, port visits, capacity building, and information sharing to ensure freedom of navigation and regional stability in accordance with international law.
