India Announces 3-Year IP Fee Waiver for Sports Sector to Boost Innovation
Honorable Union Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal have announced the major push for the sports innovation as it introducing the 3-year fee waiver on the intellectual property (IP) registrations related to the sports. This announcement was made during the World Intellectual Property Day celebrations in the New Delhi and it highlighted the India’s growing focus on the innovation, manufacturing and the global competitiveness in the sports sector.
The most important announcement was the complete waiver of the IP registration fees for three years across the all sports-related categories, including,
This move aims to encourage the startups, athletes, students and the innovators to secure legal ownership of their ideas without to facing any financial barriers.
The government will also provide the facilitation support to simplify the registration process and will making it easier for the first-time applicants.
This initiative also aligns with the broader vision of like ‘Innovate, Patent, Produce, Prosper’ which is focuses onto the turning ideas into the economic assets.
The main highlight of the event was the strong emphasis on the GI-tagged Kashmir willow cricket bat which is symbol of the India’s traditional craftsmanship and intellectual property strength.
The minister also noted that it is among the few sports products with GI recognition in India and it represents the local skill, heritage and the economic potential.
Also there is a need to expand the global reach and branding. By promoting this type of products can boost the exports, generate employment and strengthen the India’ presence in the global sports goods market.
The government is also planning to develop the sports manufacturing clusters in regions like,
These clusters are aim to increase the domestic production of sports goods, also to strengthen the local supply chains.
Also this clusters will create the employment opportunities and it will reduce the dependence on imports. Also the products like bats, balls, hockey equipment, gym tools and the training gear will experienced the boost in the indigenous manufacturing.
The minister have also launched the Viksit Bharat Digital Matrix 2026 Hackathon which will be organized with Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
